SEVEN OUT OF 10 CONSUMERS PREFER KFC® POPCORN CHICKEN TO MCDONALD'S CHICKEN MCNUGGETS®

KFC to Give America a Free Sample of Popcorn Chicken 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20

LOUISVILLE, KY - KFC announced today that according to an independent nationally-representative survey¹, seven out of 10 consumers (73 percent) prefer the taste of KFC's Popcorn Chicken to McDonald's Chicken McNuggets. To celebrate this consumer preference victory, KFC will offer America a free snack size of Popcorn Chicken at all KFC restaurants nationwide 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20.

"Our customers are fanatical about KFC's Popcorn Chicken, one of our hottest menu items," said Cheryl Bachelder, president and chief concept officer at KFC Corporation. "To celebrate America's overwhelming preference for KFC's Popcorn Chicken over McDonald's Chicken McNuggets, we decided to give away a free sample to let as many people as possible enjoy Popcorn Chicken."

In 2001, company same-store sales increased 8 percent in both periods 10 and 13 when Popcorn Chicken was featured as a limited time offer menu item. During that time, KFC beat McDonald's as the category leader for off-the-bone chicken sales. KFC holds the category leadership position for on-the-bone chicken sales.

Based on the tremendous success of a regional Popcorn Chicken "Free Day" that was held earlier this year in Houston, Texas, KFC decided to take the offer nationwide. In Houston, on average, each restaurant gave away approximately 500 snack size servings. KFC estimates that nearly four million consumers will sample Popcorn Chicken on June 20.

As part of the activities surrounding Popcorn Chicken "Free Day," KFC is taking out a full-page color advertisement in USA Today on June 20 inviting consumers to go taste the difference for themselves. Information regarding the Popcorn Chicken give-away will also be seen in conjunction with the popular national television advertisements, beginning Saturday, June 15, and radio advertisements, beginning Tuesday, June 18, featuring Jason Alexander and Barry Bonds currently on the air.

Popcorn Chicken is prepared with all-white breast meat, marinated for juicy bold flavor on the inside and lightly breaded so it's crunchy on the outside. It's available in an individual size for $1.99 and a family size for $6.99. Visit www.kfc.com to locate the nearest KFC location.
