SELLING A COLONEL SANDERS WEATHERVANE TO FEED THE HUNGRY: THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS RAISED IN KFC “RECIPE FOR HOPE” AUCTION
Customers Can Donate at KFC Restaurants through November 10 to Support the World Food Programme
LOUISVILLE, Ky., November 7, 2013 — Unique historical artifacts from Colonel Sanders’ personal collection, ranging from a 1960’s-era Colonel Sanders-shaped weathervane to a medallion presented to the Colonel by President Nixon, were recently auctioned by KFC to raise money to feed the hungry. A total of 17 historically significant items, also including a plaque that was presented to the Colonel by the Boy Scouts of America in 1976, were auctioned by Texas-based Heritage Auctions.
The auction, which ended Oct. 28, raised nearly $5,000 to benefit Feeding America, the nation’s leading hunger relief organization, and the World Food Programme (WFP), the world’s largest humanitarian agency fighting hunger. The money raised alone from the weathervane, purchased for over $1,000, and the Boy Scout plaque, purchased for over $500, will provide more than 6,000 meals to hungry women and children.
Additionally, in thousands of restaurants across the country, KFC customers are doing their part to fight hunger by donating a dollar to support KFC’s “Recipe for Hope”campaign that benefits WFP. To date, more than $1 million has been raised and donations are being accepted at participating KFC restaurants through Sunday, Nov. 10. In 2012, more than $1.8 million was donated to WFP, and since 2007, KFC restaurants in the United States have raised more than $8.5 million to fight hunger.
“We are very happy with the results of our “Recipe for Hope” charity auction— we not only raised funds, but we also raised awareness for KFC’s annual World Hunger Relief program,” said John Cywinski, President of KFC U.S. “Those who won these storied artifacts not only now own pieces of American history, but more importantly are honoring Colonel Sanders’ commitment to others by giving back— just like he did. Every dollar raised through the auction can feed four hungry children for a day.”
While the “Recipe For Hope” auction has concluded, KFC customers can still join the fight against hunger by making a donation at a participating KFC restaurant. With less than a week remaining in the campaign, several KFC restaurants have each raised more than $4,000 through their local “Recipe for Hope” fundraising efforts. The KFC restaurants in East Wareham, Mass., and Powhatan, Va., are vying for top fundraising honors, each having already raised more than $5,600!
Since 2007, KFC has participated in Yum! Brands’ nationally-recognized annual World Hunger Relief campaign supporting the World Food Programme and other hunger relief agencies. To date, KFC and Yum! Brands’ World Hunger Relief campaign has raised $150 million for the World Food Programme and other organizations, which has provided nearly 600 million meals to those in need across the globe.
